Lessons Along the Journey

March 23, 2016 by Julie James

conferencePart of being approved as house parents with our local Department of Social Development, we needed to attend a parent training held in a city over an hour a way. As Steve and I walked in to our second day of training we received some not so good news from the social worker. Evidently some of the S. Africans attending the training, complained the day before that it was in English and not Afrikaans. In a spur of the moment decision, the ministry conducting the training, decided to teach the rest of the training solely in Afrikaans. We were shocked at this sudden decision to change it, mid course, and didn’t understand how we would get approved as house parents without the course’s certificate.

One of the ladies attending offered to translate for us and when we mentioned this to the social worker, she told us, the reason for the change was “deeper than that.” The social worker then pulled me aside and told me they decided they could not train foreigners, only South Africans. At that point, it left us no choice but to leave the training with no opportunity to receive our certificate at the end of the week.

Obviously we were upset and confused that we couldn’t finish the training because from what we understood, the DSD needed us to have the training as part of our approval process. Stephen and I both felt as if we had been punched in the gut. Another set back….we’ve gotten used to those. By this time we were pretty worn out with the enemy’s tactics.

saladWe ought to know by now, that as long as we live a life sold out to Christ’s purposes and we begin to shake things up in the enemy’s camps, eventually he is going to come scratching in our salad. He hates what we are doing here, “We should expect this by now,” I told Stephen.

By the time we got in the car, I was in tears. We both sat in silence the first few miles contemplating what had just happened. Stephen broke the silence and said, “This is the enemy.” I totally agreed and by this time, I was angry at Satan.  So, what do you do when the enemy scratches in your salad one time too many? We prayed and rebuked the enemy and his schemes, we pushed back the darkness and took authority over the situation in Jesus name and we placed it at the Lords feet for him to deal with it. Why worry over something we can’t change. We decided to turn up the praise and worship music all the way from George back to Plett.

As we were driving and worshipping, we felt led to stop in Knysna on the way home to talk to the head of the DSD. She has been a huge encourager to us on this journey.  She’s the one from the beginning, who has said, “Please don’t get discouraged, hang in there, sometimes these things take a while to get approved. Just don’t leave. We really need you.” When we stopped by her office she had just heard what happened at training. She said she didn’t understand what was going on and didn’t know why they wouldn’t allow us to finish the training. She also informed us that we didn’t have to go through the training to be approved by them. Excuse me, “WHAT?” Pause. Could we rewind and hear that again? We could hardly believe what we heard her say.

She said again, “You are already approved, we just thought it would be good for you to have the training.” Ok, thank you, Lord, that was easy. That alone encouraged us tremendously! In fact, she went on to tell us of two sisters, and a young boy, that needed foster care and asked if we would be interested. Of course we would be interested. She said she would need to check with the magistrate on approving us for funding for the children. We told her to not let funding stop us from taking in the children, we would have sponsors that could help with the children’s needs even if we weren’t approved for it.

giftsWe left there on cloud nine being reminded of who has already won this war. Romans 8:31 reminds us, “What shall we say to these things, if God is for us, who can be against us?” If that wasn’t encouragement enough, as we left her office, I received a text from our friend, Connie, who lives in George. She had put the word out about us needing items for the children we will be taking into care. A friend of Connie’s had just gotten in touch to let her know that her club sponsors NPO’s and they designated R5000 to help with the needs of the children. We were blown away!

What started out as a massive blow to us, turned into an amazing day! I often wonder if our response to these blows would be any different, if we responded differently. I tend to believe so. The next time the enemy comes scratching in your salad, just change your salad dressing (mindset), and thank God that He’s in control, take authority over the situation, and leave it at His feet.

He is a good, good Father.

Hello generous friends and supporters! We just wanted to give everyone a quick update. This week we welcomed Gracie, a precious baby girl into our baby haven. (Her name means blessing) What a blessing she is, and how thankful we are to God that she was saved from a failed abortion. Praise be to God that she is now safe and in a loving home where she will receive so much love and way too many snuggles. Also, we were able to send over money for a stove (the other one bit the dust) for our soup kitchen. Thank you all for your love and support. Here are a few pictures to enjoy. Happy Friday, everyone! ... See MoreSee Less

Merry Christmas, everyone, from Merryfield’s soup kitchen in SA! It would not have been possible without you. It took a lot to pull this off, volunteers, donations sent, and lots of food bought, prepped, and prepared. The kids had a wonderful time, and we were sent five videos, and it was hard to choose just one to share. Thank you for all your love and support over the years. We, along with those we serve, have been so blessed by your generous hearts. We love you. 👑🎄🎁🙏🏽❤️ ... See MoreSee Less

Again this week we had the honor of partnering alongside our church to contribute food to those that have very little to no resources to be able to provide for their families. Due to the generosity of others, we were able to afford so much more food than in the past. 217 food parcels were assembled that included maize meal, flour, apples, soya mince, soup, and other items. We also had the privilege of helping pack and hand out those parcels to those that needed them the most. Thank you, everyone, and we look forward to being able to continue to help this community, and others, during this time. Blessings. #LibertyCare #libertychurch #partnerships #KingdomMinded @ Somerset West, Western Cape ... See MoreSee Less

Hello to you all! We wanted to share with you some wonderful news. Our precious *Jacob was just adopted at 4-months old to a loving, Christian couple. Also, we took in another beautiful baby girl, named *Avery, the day she was born. Sadly, she was a product of rape, but we are so thankful to the birth mother for sparing her life. She is a prime example of God’s precious gift of life and reminds us how valuable we are in His eyes. We are also thankful to be able to serve here and blessed to be a place of refuge and safety for these cherished ones. We're heading back to the US on June 25th for a few months to handle some family and ministry matters. Our Preston has been accepted into film school in Los Angeles and needs to be there in July. We also need to get Sterling’s drivers license in Sept, as he’s almost 18. Plus, we have some other family business that can’t be put off any longer. Along with these, we are looking forward to sharing with our supporters and others what the Lord's been doing here and future plans. We have located two properties here that could work ideally for MV that would finally give us a place of ministry to call our own. Please ask the Lord to give us wisdom as we are going over the details in preparation to make a fair offer. We're excited to share while we are stateside this opportunity for others to join us in serving orphans here in South Africa. We also want to introduce our newest board member here in South Africa, Morné Strydom. He is a wonderful, Godly businessman and property developer with 1Life Projects. He has talked extensively on how business and ministry need to come together to help see the purposes of God fulfilled. He has a model that would allow investors to make a great return on their investment as well as allow a percentage to go to Merryfield and other NPO’s. This can be replicated on every development project they undertake. He will be coming to the US with his family during our time back to talk to people in the property development industry and other investors. Please let us know of anyone who might be interested in hearing more. These types of income streams will help make MV self-sustainable and give us opportunities to help other ministries and aid us in not having to continue to ask donors for monthly support. With all that said, we would like to ask for your prayers on some very important decisions we need to make. For several years now, we have been living on and serving here on about 60-70% of the support we need. This is mostly covered through monthly donations. We do have several significant annual gifts that help offset the shortfall for about 4-5 months out of the year. The Lord has laid it on both our hearts that we are not supposed to ask specific people for money, but to only share our needs and let the Holy Spirit work through prayer. Julie was a fundraiser for many years and has no problem asking for assistance, but in this season the Holy Spirit has asked us only to share and trust Him. If someone chooses to give, we don't want it to be from compulsion by us, but cheerfully giving from their own heart how the Lord is leading them (2 Cor. 9:7). Despite the desperate need for orphan care here and opportunities that present themselves almost daily to help, we cannot go down the path into debt for ministry. We need more funding to help run the baby haven/foster home, to pay the house mother and to provide for the expenses of the baby items, etc. Since we've started MV, all the funding for ministry comes out of our personal finances, which we've contributed with joy. Unfortunately, we just can’t do that anymore. We knew we had to let our prayer warriors know how to pray specifically. We fully trust our Father for the provision needed and believe in the working of the body of Christ. We're daily spending time in worship and prayer and we know for sure that, “He's a good, good Father". There's no worry or anxiety for us as we feel peace knowing He knows what’s best. If you, or someone you know, is interested in partnering with us, please click merryfieldvillage.com/donate/ to donate.Thank you for your continued support and prayers.Blessings,Steve & JuliePrayer:- Funds for expanding Merryfield’s ministry- Our time in the US is refreshing and glorifying to the Lord-Investors willing to talk with our developer/board member for more information on bringing business and ministry together.- More monthly or one-time supporters ... The first quarter of 2019 has been busy with moving to a new city, acclimating to new surroundings and getting connected to our new social worker here. We have already had our home study done, been approved to foster children and are able to take in children in emergency situations and provide a place of safety for children here in our area. We also have partnered with our church NewGen (New Generation Church) Liberty here in Cape Town. It’s been an amazing time of new connections and opportunities to serve orphaned and vulnerable children. We've had some incredible meetings with like-minded individuals and organizations. One of those came out of the blue when Julie received a call from Joan Smith (Tich and Joan are the founders of LIV Village in Durban). They are looking to start a children's village in our area. We met with them, our pastor and his wife, LIV Cape Town directors, Rob & Niki, and others doing ministry here in our area with children. The Holy Spirit truly guided that time and refreshed all of us who truly have a heart for the less fortunate. We look forward to seeing how He will use us together for His kingdom purposes in the future. As we've mentioned in the past, we've partnered with our church to help start a baby haven to take in orphans and those who have been abandoned. This past week there were three babies in care including little Jacob* that's been in care since December. Julie had an opportunity to serve these precious children for the entire week. As a praise, Jacob* was adopted into his forever home this past Monday. It was a blessing to show the love of our Savior to him these last four months and it’s touched our hearts to be a part of such an important need in this area. Also, our pastor here has approached us to oversee our church's outreach initiative called Liberty Care. This would not only include the orphans and vulnerable children’s ministry, but also the other ministries that reach out to the poor and those in need in our community. We see this as a natural extension of what He's called us to do here. We only want to serve where we see the Father working and calling us. As we continue to pray and seek Him for a farm for MV, we will faithfully serve those the Lord puts in front of us.Lastly, we are in a place of need for more monthly and one-time supporters in order to continue serving in South Africa. Your contributions not only help us and MV but also other like-minded non-profits here, a Christian radio station, support of the baby haven and help those we have taken in that have no family. If you, or someone you know, is interested in partnering with us, please click merryfieldvillage.com/donate/. We couldn’t continue to serve those the Lord leads to us without you partnering with us each month. Thank you so much.Thank you for your continued support and prayers.Blessings,Steve & JuliePrayer:- Current and future ministry within our area through our church & MV- Farm for MV- More monthly or one-time supportersP.S. - We are looking to return to the US this summer to bring Preston back and handle some things state-side that we can no longer put off. We're looking for a place in Lynchburg, VA for several months. If you know of anything available, please drop us a message. ... See MoreSee Less

See the plan!

November 29, 2017 By Steve James

Merryfield Village is modeling after LIV Village, a children’s village outside of Durban. The areas of ministry placed in the hearts of the founders of Merryfield are similar to LIV’s, and the graphic below represents how the village could be laid out. Depending on the size and shape of the property we acquire, and future […]
